The History of Odesa - Past and Present

On 24 April 2024, lecturer Viktor Myroshnychenko and student Viktoriia Laskava (group 2 RP-09) took part in the V Student Inter-University Conference on the topic "The History of Odesa: Past and Present".

The conference was held at the Separate Structural Subdivision Mechanical and Technological Professional College of ONTU, with the support of the regional methodological committees of history lecturers (chaired by Nadiia Puhachova) and of lecturers of social disciplines and law (chaired by Viktor Myroshnychenko) of the institutions of professional pre-higher education of Odesa Region.

The range of topics covered by the students' presentations was exceptionally wide: a historical overview of the influence of Ukrainians on the development of Odesa; the occupation regime in Odesa in 1941-1944; the colonisation of southern Ukraine and the Odesa region, and more.

Viktoriia Laskava, a student of our college, gave a presentation entitled "Vasyl Navrotskyi: The Voice of Odesa". In it she examined the main milestones in the life and work of Vasyl Navrotskyi - an exceptionally extraordinary man, the owner of the first car in Odesa and in the empire, and the founder and publisher of newspapers, the best known of which was called “Odesa Leaflet”, among much else. His house still stands in Odesa today.

The conference was held in a mixed format - the lecturers were on the college premises, while the students spoke via the ZOOM platform.

At the close of the conference, the Director of the College, Olena Kychuk, stressed that the history of Odesa and of southern Ukraine is rich and diverse. By studying the scholarly work of researchers of the region, one can easily trace that the modern towns and villages of our region, and Odesa itself, have a long and ancient history of formation, development and flourishing. And this history must be researched and promoted.
