Unity Day of Ukraine at OTPC ONTU

On 22 January we celebrate one of the landmark holidays of the Ukrainian state — Unity Day of Ukraine.

What does the word “sobornist” of Ukraine mean? Sobornist is the unity of our lands. The sobornist of Ukraine is the unity of all Ukrainians around the main ideas of our future. The holiday was officially established in 1999, in view of the great political and historical significance of the union of the UPR and the WUPR for the creation of a single (united) Ukrainian state. The Act of Union crowned the aspirations of Ukrainians in both parts of Ukraine – the Dnieper region and the Dniester region – for unity, dating back at least to the mid-19th century.

34 years ago Ukrainians took to the streets, joined hands and linked Kyiv with Lviv and then with Ivano-Frankivsk in a “human chain” (the “Ukrainian Wave”) to mark the 71st anniversary of the proclamation of the Act of Union of the UPR and the WUPR on 22 January 1919.

This action, which took place on Sunday, 21 January 1990, on the eve of the Day of Union, is one of the largest of its kind in world history. The “human chain” became one of the important steps towards the restoration of the Ukrainian state. People joined hands to demonstrate the unity of Ukraine on the path to independence. The “Ukrainian Wave” action was organised by the People's Movement of Ukraine, headed by Ivan Drach, with the former political prisoner Mykhailo Horyn as head of its executive body, the Secretariat. Preparations for the “human chain” began as early as September 1989, with organisers from different regions meeting every month or even every two weeks.

From 21 to 23 January 2026, for Unity Day of Ukraine, lecturers of the Subject Committee for Social Sciences and Humanities of OTPC ONTU Dzhabrailov M. V., Khrulov M. V., Spirzhenko R. I. and Muravskyi O. V., under the guidance of Deputy Director for Educational and Extracurricular Work Tetiana Kopaihorodska, organised and held events dedicated to this remarkable date.

A tutorial hour, “Unity for the Sake of Independence”, was created for all groups (a lecture and a presentation were provided to the college's group tutors); themed documentaries, history lectures and a quiz game were also prepared.

A competition of artistic and patriotic greeting cards for Unity Day of Ukraine on the theme “UKRAINE IS ONE AND INDIVISIBLE” was held among students.

Themed lectures and discussions were held with students.
